Tappi versus iso brightness scale. TAPPI T 525 is used for the determination of the brightness of white, near-white, and naturally colored pulp, paper, and paperboard. Brightness is a commonly used industry term for the numerical value of the reflectance factor of a sample with respect to blue light of specific spectral and geometric characteristics. Brightness, as specified by the TAPPI is the measurement of the amount of reflectance of blue light (Wavelength 457 nanometers, 44nm wide). There is also an ISO standard for measuring brightness (ISO 2469 - Paper, board and pulps - Measurement of diffuse radiance factor) but this is rarely used as the CIE whiteness scale is the more common measurement. Standard brightness scale, TAPPI T 452/GE brightness will yield the lowest brightness number of the three methods. TAPPI T 452/GE brightness numbers will rarely exceed 100. When measuring the same paper sample, ISO brightness numbers will be slightly higher than those produced by the GE brightness method.
